At the start of the school year, the Northumberland Elementary VTSS/PBIS team invited families in grades PreK-5th grade to the school to create positive, praise statements that would inspire them as they walked the halls of their school. Also, included in their time was a discussion on how parents can engage in their children’s learning at school and at home. They introduced PBIS to the families, including their school-wide expectations (Anchored in the SEAS of Learning).  They had a brief presentation on Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students). The presentation was brief to allow families to participate in the activity where they created a poster as a family that included encouraging words to be displayed around the school. Families worked together and then had a fun snack together. It was a great turnout and a great night!

The goal of the activity was to create a positive learning environment in the building that included students and families.

With just a few items such as posters, markers, and pens the students along with their family member created the following posters to adorn the hallways. Some of the positive phrases:
